On the 27th of June, Anne and I will be celebrating her 18th and my 21st birthday. Our actual birthday is on the 23rd of June. But for convenience, we decided to celebrate it with our friends and relatives on the weekend of the 27th of June 2009.
It will be a simple dinner with friends and relatives with nothing fancy. After all, we need each other to have a good time of fun!
In conjunction with our birthday celebration, we will be doing a little bit to give back to our society. Instead of bringing gifts, we kindly request that you bring a donation for the charity we are supporting: the Integral Human Development, IHD.
One of the main focuses of the IHD is on the homeless and poor. Every weekday throughout the year, lunch is served to the homeless. Averaging of about 180 pax each serving, they range from teenagers to senior citizens comprising of various races. Sadly, the numbers have been increasing.
The soup kitchen is held next to the IHD office at the St. John's cathedral in Kuala Lumpur. For each lunch serving, costs reach to about RM300. For 180 people, this averages out to RM1.67. For this, they will each get rice, chicken or fish, vegetable and either a fruit or a fried egg. On occasions when there are no private sponsors (for the RM300), the IHD pays for it. Thus due to the fact that there are many servings in a year which are not sponsored by a private sponsor, a simpler, lower cost meal is served. This would mean that the chicken or fish is substituted with either tofu or any other equivalent dish.
For many of them, this meal is their only meal in the day. This may not seem a big deal to us, but these homeless people do not have a fixed home and have to move about regularly thus requiring substantial food intake. Based on my personal experience of feeding the homeless, having a privately sponsored meal, which would mean that there would be either chicken or fish, makes a very huge difference to them. They would be very grateful for that difference.
My late father was a very keen supporter of this charity. In light of this, I will be proudly following his footsteps in helping the homeless make a change for their lives.
Therefore, I sincerely plead for your generous donations. Your donation would make a homeless person not go hungry for a day. On the day of our dinner, I will be collecting donations, upon which a receipt will be issued. Subsequently, I will be sending out e-mails regarding which soup kitchen serving your donation has gone to. At your own discretion, you would be invited to come and join us for feeding the homeless on that particular day. Should you not be able to attend the dinner, you are still more than welcomed to make a donation.
If you require any details regarding this or the charity I'm supporting, please do not hesitate to contact me on my UK mobile: +447506022201 or my Malaysian mobile +6012-3063105, or the best would be via e-mail at paulchua7@hotmail.com.
